The top edge height of top rails, or equivalent guardrail system members, are 42 inches (107 cm), plus or minus 3 inches (8 cm), above the walking-working surface. The top edge height may exceed 45 inches (114 cm), provided the guardrail system meets all other criteria of paragraph (b) of this section (see Figure D-11 of this section).

Strength criteria. Handrails and the top rails of stair rail systems are capable of withstanding, without failure, a force of at least 200 pounds (890 N) applied in any downward or outward direction within 2 inches (5 cm) of any point along the top edge of the rail.

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of grab rail position, orientation, and number of hands used on the kinetics of assisted sit-to-stand transfers. Participants were 12 able-bodied older adults between the ages of 69 and 88 years. While each one performed the sit-to-stand transfer, a motion analysis system with 9 cameras recording at 60 Hz tracked the 3-D trajectories of retroreflective markers. Bilateral 37-D platform, grab rail, and seat force data were collected at 200 Hz and normalized to participant body weight. Four lateral conditions were tested: vertical, 45 degrees inclined, and horizontal with the hand placed at 150 mm and 400 mm forward of the seat front edge. Four anterior conditions were tested: vertical and horizontal orientations with the use of one hand and two hands. Posterior grab rail force increased with anterior assistance and with two-hand use compared to lateral assistance and single hand use, respectively. The selection of grab rail position and the number of hands incorporated during assistance also determined the symmetry of anteroposterior net joint forces, net joint moments, and joint powers. Grab rail orientation determined the height of the gripping hand which influenced the assistance strategy. Grab rail position, orientation, and the amount of upper body contribution influenced the assisted sit-to-stand transfer. These kinetic responses to grab rail location require careful consideration in order to optimize grab rail assistance during the sit-to-stand transfer.


Essential Medical Supply, Inc., sold about 272,000 units of the bed rails at medical supply stores nationwide and online at www.amazon.com and www.walmart.com. The bed rails were sold from October 2006 through December 2021 for between $36 and $98.


Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bed rails. For consumers who own bed rails sold or imported on or after November 1, 2015, Essential Medical Supply, Inc., will provide a refund. The amount of the refund will be pro-rated based on the age of the bed rail. The company is not offering a remedy for older bed rails. Consumers with older bed rails sold between October 2006 and October 2015 should stop use, disassemble and dispose of the bed rails to prevent reuse.

Handrails are usually used to provide support for body or to hold clothings in a bathroom or similar areas. Handrails are commonly used while ascending or descending stairways and escalators in order to prevent injurious falls or to hold necessities. Handrails are typically supported by balusters or attached to walls.


Handrails are located at a height between 34 and 38 inches (864 and 965 mm). In areas where children are the principal users of a building or facility, the 2010 ADASAD recommends that a second set of handrails at a maximum height of 28 inches (711 mm) measured to the top of the gripping surface from the ramp surface or stair nosing can assist in preventing accidents.


Handrails are to support a continuous load of 50 pounds per foot (74 kg/m) or a concentrated load of 200 pounds (91 kg) applied at the top of the handrail.[9] As handrails come in different materials, the strengths can vary. From timber to stainless steel, it is best to pick a handrail that will be right for the area. Stainless steel will be stronger and more durable outside, whereas timber can be just as strong but less durable outside.[10]


ADA Handrail height requirements are issued to create a safe enjoyable space to enjoy for everyone. The ADA height of handrail requirements that will primarily be used by children have their own unique requirements.

For some reason our aging made my husband and I afraid to be on a ladder, and even more terrified to climb onto a roof, the last attempt I had to threaten my husband I would call the fire department as he could not get the courage to get off the roof onto a ladder I was holding.
